Homeschooling with AI, Yay or Nay? Pros & Cons for Moms

homeschool mom using AI for lesson planning

Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere right now—some people are excited, others are hesitant, and plenty of us are somewhere in the middle. As homeschool parents, we want tools that support us without replacing us, and resources that save time without overwhelming us with more “stuff.”

So the question is: Does AI have a place in homeschooling? Yay or nay?

Let’s take a look at three big areas where AI can be used: curriculum creation, lesson planning, and even students using AI.

Curriculum Creation with AI: Yay or Nay?

The Nay: There’s comfort in a structured curriculum. A workbook or packaged program often feels more reliable because it’s been tested and reviewed. With AI, there’s always the chance that content could be inaccurate or not align with your state standards. That means you’ll need to double-check what it creates.

The Yay: But AI is incredibly helpful when you don’t need to purchase an entire $150 curriculum package. Let’s say your child needs just a few nonfiction reading passages, or a handful of extra math problems, or a short history unit. With the right prompt, you can ask AI to generate exactly what you need in seconds—no extra cost, no waiting for shipping, no wasted pages you’ll never use.

Lesson Planning with AI: Yay or Nay?

The Nay: If you love creating your own lesson plans or browsing Pinterest for ideas, you might wonder if AI is necessary. And yes, it can sometimes over-deliver—handing you more worksheets and activities than you’ll ever use.

The Yay: Where AI shines is in simplicity and speed. For example, you can type:“Create a 30-minute 4th-grade art lesson on Charles Schulz, including a short artist biography, engaging discussion questions, a materials list, and a cartoon drawing activity.”

In seconds, you have a ready-to-go plan with everything in one place. That means no more late-night research, no more piecing together random resources. AI becomes your assistant, helping you prepare quickly so you can spend more time connecting with your kids.

My Story:

My daughter had to write a speech for her communication class on a sociopolitical persuasive topic. That sounded a little intimidating at first, but we decided to let AI do the heavy lifting for brainstorming.

We popped in some of our initial ideas, and AI instantly gave us a list of 20 potential topics she could research. It was so easy—and it saved her from the whole “I don’t know what to write about” stress. From there, she took her list and did her actual research the old-fashioned way (not with AI 😉).

Students Using AI: Yay or Nay?

The Nay: This is the hot-button topic. Many parents worry that kids will use AI as a shortcut—letting it write essays, solve math problems, or do all of the thinking for them. Those concerns are valid, especially if students aren’t taught how to use AI wisely.

The Yay: AI doesn’t have to be a crutch—it can be a coach. Students can use it to:

  • Brainstorm ideas before starting an essay.

  • Get explanations in simpler language when they’re stuck.

  • Practice skills at just the right level of difficulty.

  • Review material with customized quizzes.

The key is boundaries. Just like calculators didn’t ruin math education, AI won’t ruin learning—if we guide kids to use it as a tool, not a replacement for thinking.

(This topic is big enough for its own post, and I’ll be writing more on it soon!)

So, Yay or Nay?

I lean toward Yay—with wisdom. AI isn’t here to replace you—it’s here to lighten your load. It helps you create quick resources, adapt lessons for each child, and build margin into your day.

Here’s how to use AI responsibly in your homeschool:

  • Let AI fill the gaps and save you time.

  • Stick with curriculum when you need structure.

  • Always double-check for accuracy.

  • And remember—don’t check your brain at the door. AI is your assistant, but you’re still the teacher.
